Mark Cocks Transplant Research Scholarship Awarded
14 August 2008
A Sydney research officer and PhD candidate has been awarded the prestigious Mark Cocks Transplant Research Scholarship.
Allison Tong, from the Centre for Kidney Research at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead, will use the $15,000 scholarship for a study titled “Adolescent perceptions of quality of life following kidney transplantation”.
Solid organ transplantation has improved survival for adolescents with end-stage kidney disease but little is known about its impact on quality of life from their perspective.
In-depth, face-to-face interviews will be conducted initially with up to 30 adolescent kidney transplant recipients, aged 11 to 21 years, from Australia and New Zealand. The funding will support travel expenses to interview participants, purchase of equipment for data collection and analysis and publication and presentation of findings.
The scholarship, offered by Transplant Australia and administered by the Transplantation Society of Australia and New Zealand (TSANZ), recognises the life of Mark Cocks and his contribution to Transplant Australia and the wider transplant community.
Tong was presented with her award at the TSANZ AGM on August 14, during the XXII International Congress of the Transplantation Society in Sydney. She will present her findings next year at the TSANZ annual scientific meeting and the World Transplant Games.
