The first Australian Transplant Games were held in Melbourne, Victoria in 1988 where a total of 150 participants competed in sports and recreational events. Since then the Australian Transplant Games have been held biennially with the most recent Games being held in Adelaide in September/October 2004. These Games attracted over 1,000 participants from around Australia and the world.
In addition to medals awarded in each sporting and recreational event, there is also the Victor Chang Memorial Shield, the Donor Family Shield, the Cup for the Athlete of the Games, the Clifford C Henderson Shields (1 male and 1 female), the Jack Nolan Encouragement Award, the Lorraine McLeod Womens Tennis award and the Junior Shield. These awards are presented to individuals who embody the spirit of the Games or individual States achieving the most medal points in each category.
A range of activities are offered from Chess and Backgammon to high level sports including Tennis, Squash, Athletics and Swimming. The Australian Transplant Games promote physical activity and improved health among participants, showing the quality of life one can experience. They provide an opportunity to network with others in similar situations transplant recipients, those undergoing dialysis treatment, those awaiting transplantation, living donors, family members of deceased donors and supporters. Participants are also offered access to medical professionals at the Medical Information Seminar.
The Australian Transplant Games promote awareness of organ donation and have resulted in an increased organ donation rate in each year the Games are held.
