Senator Jan McLucas, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Health and Ageing
Senator Jan McLucas was a primary school teacher, mainly in North Queensland, for 10 years before beginning public life with her election as a Cairns City Councillor in 1995. She entered the Senate in July 1999 and from November 2004 to November 2007 was the Shadow Minister for Ageing, Disabilities and Carers.
On December 3, 2007 Senator McLucas was sworn in as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Health and Ageing, in Prime Minister Kevin Rudd’s first Ministry.
Within weeks Senator Jan McLucas had shown a genuine commitment to helping lead the sector to a more cohesive and coordinated approach to organ and tissue donation.
In February 2008 Senator McLucas received the final report of the National Clinical Taskforce on Organ and Tissue Donation, containing 51 recommendations to improve the donation and transplantation system.
In a February media release Senator McLucas said: “I have assured the taskforce members that I will be carefully considering those recommendations and discussing them with my State and territory colleagues in light of Australia’s low rate of donation.
“I am acutely aware of the need to improve the system and to do more to encourage people to register their wishes and discuss them with their families.”
On July 1 Senator McLucas joined Prime Minister Kevin Rudd in Sydney to announce a $136.4 million national reform package to establish Australia as a world leader in organ donation for transplantation.
