Transplant Australia is the largest support organisation of its kind in the world representing over 7,000 members of all ages. Our membership includes people who are currently undergoing dialysis treatment, transplant recipients, those awaiting transplantation, and their families, family members of deceased donors, living donors and medical professionals.
Transplant Australias vision is for Australia to lead the world in making organ transplants available to all who need one; saving lives, minimising suffering, and providing care and support. Transplant Australia is committed to increasing the number of transplants performed in Australia
By aligning with events such as the Toyota Muster in Gympie, conducting a Health Expo for Indigenous Australians and conducting surveys to determine Australians attitudes towards organ and tissue donation and transplantation, Transplant Australia works hard to raise awareness of the need for organ and tissue donation.
One way of demonstrating the improved quality of life following transplantation is the participation in the Australian Transplant Games, which Transplant Australia holds every two years. The success of the Australian teams who attend the World Transplant Games every two years in the intermediate years is evidence of the improved quality of life for those participants and their families. Transplant Australia hosted the 1997 World Games in Sydney, NSW and will be hosting the 2009 World Games at the Gold Coast, Queensland.
The Australian Transplant Cricket Club (ATCC) commenced in 2004 with a challenge to the Great Britain Transplant Cricket Club (GBTCC) and played for the David Hookes Memorial Trophy in Adelaide 2004 during the Australian Transplant Games. The series continues with the return matches being played in the UK during July 2006.
Transplant Australia also offers a range of support services for transplant recipients, people undergoing dialysis treatment, those awaiting a transplant, families of deceased donors and living donors and their families, carers and supporters. Counseling, financial support, transportation, medical information, advising respective health departments on legislation, lobbying for greater access to dialysis for people undergoing dialysis treatment and helping to get vital drugs for transplant recipients approved on the pharmaceutical benefits scheme are just some examples of what Transplant Australia is in involved in on a daily basis.
