Community Champion Position Description

POSITION: Community Champion
REPORTS TO: Project Manager, Community Engagement Program
NATURE OF APPOINTMENT: Volunteer: Annual appointment. (Casual basis) To be reviewed annually

PURPOSE OF POSITION

  1. To guide and educate the public on organ and tissue donation, the Australian Organ Donor Register and family education so people can make an informed decision about organ and tissue donation
  2. To deliver a series of active events and seminars to various groups at different levels while proactively encouraging people in the community to become more aware about the positive benefits of transplantation

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • To deliver education seminars on organ & tissue donation
  • To educate on the community benefits of transplantation
  • To positively promote organ & tissue donation
  • To increase the level of interest and registrations to the Australian Organ Donor Register
  • Lead the successful implementation and delivery of onsite education toolkit program
  • Foster a supportive education and learning place culture in relation to organ & tissue donation awareness & registration
  • Measure, monitor and report on the effectiveness of local feedback and general community awareness of organ & tissue donation
  • Ensure all toolkit education material is delivered and used as per instructions and within the spirit of intent
  • Ensure all questions are appropriately managed and if required, sourced for answer once confirmed with manager regarding relevance
  • Provide hand out and pack material as per instructions
  • Take reasonable care for the health and safety of yourself and others
  • Contribute to the greater awareness of organ & tissue donation across Australia
  • Actively encourage people to consider donation, register their intent on the Register and educate their family on this wish
  • Other duties as requested by Team life coordinators
  • The duties as specified above may be altered in accordance with the changing requirements of the position
  • Deliver high level presentations to various demographic groups to promote organ and tissue donation values, awareness and education
  • To abide by and act within the Australian Volunteers code of conduct
  • To abide by all Australian laws and OH&S requirements
  • To work within, apply and be respectful to Transplant Australia’s codes of conduct, policies, practices & processes
  • To notify management of any issues that arise from events & the role as a champion
  • To be respectful, empathetic, kind & thoughtful to everyone whilst in the role as a champion

 COMPETENCIES

  1. Highly developed communication skills – verbal & written
  2. To conduct presentations – group education seminars, promotions
  3. Ability to manage a group of various of ages and educational levels
  4. Ability to deal with difficult questions & emotional issues
  5. Ability to identify and acknowledge areas of minimal knowledge and identify sources to obtain & respond appropriately, with knowledge or information as requested.
  6. Positive attitude towards organ & tissue donation within the spirit and virtue of intent of the campaign
  7. Ensuring the greater good of all and providing equity in all dealings
  8. Other tasks as requested by management
  9. Approx 10+ presentations per year to be reviewed annually

SELECTION CRITERIA 

Essential

  1. A commitment to the promotion of organ and tissue donation values, awareness and education
  2. Ability to impart information to the appropriate nature of the audience
  3. Goodwill spirit and intent for the organ & tissue cause and the Australian Organ Donor Register
  4. Drivers licence and or ability to access transport for speaking engagements
  5. Personal presentation of a high standard to reflect professional standard and respect of the organisation
  6. Well spoken, organised, flexible, with a passion to share their experiences of organ and tissue donors with others
  7. To gain positive feedback from the performance feedback form
  8. To be able to attend all requested champion events - up to 10 per year
  9. Flexible with time management regarding attendance of committed events
  10. A donor family, recipient and or professional / personal experience with organ & tissue donation

Desirable

  1. Health background – i.e. Nursing, enrolled, paramedics, science, tissue bank or experience in the clinical area of donation and or transplantation
  2. Education promotion experience
  3. Public speaking / communication experience & or ability to learn
  4. People who have observed the transplant experience eg. a friend or a work colleague
