Perth 2008 Results with times
Australian Transplant Games are held every two years and provide “living proof” that organ and tissue donation works, allowing recipients to return to a productive and fulfilling life.
On October 4-11, 2008, the cities of Belmont and Perth had the honour of staging the 11th Australian Transplant Games - the nation’s largest organ and tissue donor awareness event.
All child and adult athletes have received a life-saving transplant including heart, lung, liver, bone marrow and kidney. The 2008 games was the first time tissue recipients were able to compete – both in their own categories in exertion sports and against organ recipients in non-exertion sports. People currently undergoing dialysis were also welcomed to compete.
The Games aim to raise organ and tissue donation awareness; encourage all Australians to sign the Australian Organ Donor Register; and to demonstrate, through sport, that transplant recipients are able to return to a high level of fitness and quality of life. Importantly, the Games also show gratitude to the families of organ and tissue donors and living donors.
The 2008 Australian Transplant Games partners were, the Federal Department of Health and Ageing; Lotterywest; EventsCorp Western Australia; Australian Sports Commission; City of Belmont; and City of Perth.
