Australian Transplant Cricket Club
The Story So Far
Following the death of David Hookes in 2004, the Australian Transplant Cricket Club (ATCC) established the David Hookes Memorial Shield in honour of this great Australian cricketer. The Shield is contested every two years between Australian and British transplant recipients. The next series is to be held in Perth, Bowral and Sydney in October 2008.
The Club was named Australian Cricket Club of the Year in 2005 after winning ABC Radio Grandstand’s annual competition.
The Memorial Shield highlights the importance of organ and tissue donation. The inaugural event was held between the Great Britain Transplant Cricket Club (GBTCC) and members of Transplant Australia in 2004. Those teams competed in Adelaide at the Adelaide Oval Number 2 and in Sydney for the David Hookes Memorial Shield.
The series comprised of two “Test” matches and two one-day games, played in a competitive yet sporting manner, with the Transplant Australia team emerging victorious. As a result of the success of that series the Great Britain Transplant Cricket Club issued an invitation for an Australian team to tour and play a cricket series in England during July/August 2006. The Australian Transplant Cricket Club accepted the invitation to defend the shield and tour England. On this occasion the home team was victorious.
