The Games, to be hosted by the City of Belmont, which is located just minutes from the Perth CBD, are now officially listed by WA Events Corporation as a state-endorsed event.
The Games Local Organising Committee applied to Lotterywest for a significant grant and is thrilled to report that a grant of $154,000 has been secured to help underwrite the Games. In addition WA Events Corp is contributing $50,000. The cities of Belmont and Perth have also agreed to partner the Games and provide significant financial support.
Transplant Australia CEO, Chris Thomas, said the funding, together with the backing of the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing, would ensure a successful games.
Were pleased we have been able to continue to grow sponsorship for the Games. All governments are looking for ways to reduce the transplant waiting lists and there are currently 125 West Australians urgently waiting a transplant. These games will highlight the need for organ donors and if history repeats itself, will lead to a direct increase in donation rates, Chris said.
Id like to recognise the contribution of the LOC members in helping us to achieve the support of the Government, in particular Simone McMahon, Anne Bradshaw and George Hobson. WA Parliamentarian, Paul Andrews, MLA, has also joined our Advisory Board along with Kidney Healths Julie Edmonds. It has been a real team effort.
The LOC is currently putting the finishing touches on the program. Highlights include:
- The Opening Ceremony to be held in the Perth Concert Hall on the afternoon of October 5
- An opening dinner at the Gloucester Park Trots where a special transplant race meet is being planned
- A Teamlife thankyou parade being planned for the morning of Monday, October 6 through the main streets of the Perth CBD.
- Pre-opening festivities at Langley Park where it is anticipated that a public Teamlife cycle ride involving six councils will conclude
- The games hub being located at the Belmont Sport and Recreation Club which will include registration, lawn bowls, darts and evening dinners.
Coinciding with the Games will be the David Hookes Memorial Series between Australia and Great Britain and will include two one-day games and a test match in Perth.
The Perth website will go live early in the new year with registration available in March.
