Tragic Accident involving the University of Michigan Transplant Team

4 June 2007

The Tragic Accident Involving the University of Michigan Transplant Team. A statement from the American Society of Transplant Surgeons by the President, Goran B. Klintmalm, MD, PhD, FACS.

The American Society of Transplant Surgeons is extremely saddened at the tragic turn of events during an organ retrieval mission in Milwaukee, WI. Our deepest condolences go out to the families who lost loved ones. We also extend our deepest sympathies to our colleagues and friends at the University of Michigan. Many ASTS members have worked along side this transplant team for many years and share deeply in this tragic loss. Their passion for saving lives is valued by all within the transplant community.

On Monday, June 4, 2007, four members of the Transplant Team at the University of Michigan (U-M) and two pilots from Marlin Air, who operate the Survival Flight missions for U-M, were en route from Milwaukee to Detroit after retrieving lungs for transplant at the University of Michigan when their plane crashed soon after take-off.

Aboard the aircraft were:
- David Ashburn, M.D., a fellow in pediatric cardiothoracic surgery
- Richard Chenault II, a transplant donation specialist with the U-M Transplant Program
- Dennis Hoyes, a Marlin Air pilot
- Richard Lapensee, a transplant donation specialist with the U-M Transplant Program
- Bill Serra, a Marlin Air pilot
- Martinus (Martin) Spoor, M.D., a cardiac surgeon and member of the U-M faculty since 2003.

Please join the ASTS and the transplant community in expressing our deeply felt sorrow and support. Letters may be sent to:
