Perth wins rights to host 2008 Australian Transplant Games
More than 1200 participants from around Australia and the world will take part in the 11th Australian Transplant Games from October 4 to 11 next year.
Tourism Minister Sheila McHale said this will be the first time Perth has hosted the biennial games in the events 20-year history.
Competitors, who are made up of transplant recipients and people currently undergoing dialysis, will compete in 14 sporting and five recreational events over six days of competition, Ms McHale said.
The Transplant Games consist of a range of activities from chess and backgammon to high-level sports including tennis, squash, athletics and swimming.
The State Government through EventsCorp has invested $50,000 into the 2008 Australian Transplant Games, and the event is expected to attract about 500 interstate and international visitors.
Id like to acknowledge Lotterywests significant contribution of $150,000 which will enable significant community participation in this important event.
The Australian Transplant Games promotes physical activity and shows that transplant recipients are able to return to a good quality of life.
It also increases awareness of organ donation among the local community.
There are currently 132 Western Australians waiting for an organ transplant.
