Transplant Australia has honoured its former CEO, Mark Cocks, AM by announcing a new research scholarship in his name. The announcement was made at a dinner to celebrate Marks contribution to the success of Transplant Australia.
The audience of 110 people from all over Australia were surprised when Federal Minister for Health and Ageing, Tony Abbott, made a surprise visit to speak of his regard for Mark and the work of Transplant Australia.
Other speakers included Maurice Slapak, Founder of the World Transplant Games Federation, Associate Professor Daryl Wall, TAs National Medical Director, Bernie Morellini, TA Chairman, and Marks sister Julie and father Keith.
Daryl spoke of the challenges facing TA. New CEO Chris Thomas referred to a recent survey of membership and what the members thought were the priorities. One emerging issue was further research into transplantation and quality of Life issues. Chris announced the establishment of the Mark Cocks Transplant Research Scholarship which would be reviewed by a panel consisting of Daryl Wall, Professor Jeremy Chapman, Professor Graeme Russ and TA Chairman, Bernie Morellini. The first scholarship would examine quality of life issues post-transplant for children and teenagers
Transplant Australia is supporting the establishment of a Foundation to raise money for the late V8 Supercar driver Ashley Cooper's partner Casey and their young children Ella and Bailey.
